Sanofi Canada says Nuvaxovid, a protein-based COVID-19 vaccine, is being supplied for the 2026–27 respiratory season through provincial programs in all provinces and Yukon, with coverage through most private insurers. Its October 28 announcement says the product is already available in British Columbia, Alberta and Quebec. In Ontario, distribution to provider offices and public-health units was expected to begin the week of October 26, with pharmacy availability to follow. That announcement is a national supply update—not a guarantee that a particular pharmacy has doses or that every patient qualifies for public funding.

What patients and pharmacies can confirm

Toronto Public Health lists the Sanofi Nuvaxovid XFG vaccine for people aged 12 and older and says it will be available only at participating pharmacies. Ottawa Public Health likewise directs people seeking Nuvaxovid to participating pharmacies and recommends contacting the pharmacy in advance to check whether the specific product is available. These local instructions are more useful for a patient trying to book than a national announcement alone, but they should not be assumed to describe every province or health authority.

Health Canada’s Drug Product Database lists Nuvaxovid under DIN 02558998 with marketed status. The current development is its seasonal supply and distribution for 2026–27; it is not a newly issued Canadian authorization. The product is indicated for active immunization against COVID-19 in people aged 12 years and older. The vaccine uses a protein-based, non-mRNA platform, which may be relevant to a patient’s preference or clinical discussion, but platform type alone does not establish that one product is more effective or safer for a particular person.

Eligibility and funding remain local questions

Sanofi’s statement that the vaccine is supplied through provincial respiratory programs and most private insurers should be read alongside each jurisdiction’s rules. Public-program eligibility can depend on age, medical risk, timing, product availability and the current provincial schedule. Private-plan coverage is also subject to the individual policy. Pharmacies may have different ordering timelines, and seasonal vaccine stock can change quickly. Patients should check with the local public-health authority and participating pharmacy before traveling or assuming a dose is in stock.

Practice points for pharmacy teams

  • Confirm the current provincial or territorial program bulletin, eligible age and risk criteria, and funding pathway before booking or billing.
  • Check that the patient is seeking Nuvaxovid specifically; do not substitute or describe another COVID-19 vaccine as equivalent without following current clinical guidance and the patient’s informed choice.
  • Confirm product availability, appointment requirements and any ordering lead time with the pharmacy before promising a vaccination date.
  • Use the current Health Canada product monograph and local guidance for screening, consent, administration, documentation and post-vaccination advice.
  • Explain clearly whether a dose is publicly funded, privately insured or available only for purchase, and verify the patient’s own coverage instead of relying on a national insurer statement.

The new season expands the range of COVID-19 vaccine options in Canada, but the practical access story is local. Sanofi’s announcement establishes the manufacturer’s supply plan; public-health authorities set program rules, and pharmacies confirm what is actually available at the point of care.
