Clinical Snapshot

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic systemic autoimmune disease in which loss of immune tolerance drives inflammatory synovitis โ€” most often a symmetric polyarthritis of the small joints of the hands and feet โ€” that progresses to cartilage and bone erosion, joint deformity, and disability if left uncontrolled. Radiographic erosions can appear within the first year of untreated disease, which is why current guidance directs starting disease-modifying therapy immediately at diagnosis rather than simply controlling symptoms.[1] RA also carries systemic disease burden independent of joint involvement โ€” an increased risk of cardiovascular disease comparable to diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, lymphoproliferative disease, interstitial lung disease, and depression โ€” so routine RA care includes actively screening for and managing these comorbidities, not just the joints.
