Alberta Expands TPP Pad Exemptions for Eligible Connect Care Prescriptions

The Alberta College of Pharmacy’s September 8 reminder describes Tracked Prescription Program (TPP) pad exemptions effective September 2, 2026, affecting prescriptions received by community pharmacies.

Where the exemptions apply

Eligible acute-care inpatient discharges using Connect Care can use secure e-fax for Type 1 medicines. Emergency departments and ambulatory clinics are excluded. Recovery Alberta Opioid Dependency Program clinics have a narrower exemption for methadone and slow-release oral morphine through eligible Connect Care workflows; other Type 1 and compounded medicines are excluded.

Practice guidance for pharmacists

• Identify the originating care setting.
• Check the medicine against the applicable exemption.
• Use the prescription validation tool as a supplement to existing authenticity checks.
• Contact the prescriber when concerns remain.
• Retain existing TPP procedures for prescriptions outside the exemption.
