World Pharmacists Day was observed on September 25, 2026, under the theme “Empowering pharmacists for healthier futures.” The International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) used this year’s campaign to shift the conversation from appreciation alone to the conditions pharmacy professionals need to deliver their full value.

Why the 2026 theme matters

FIP points to demographic change, noncommunicable diseases, digital transformation and climate pressures as forces reshaping healthcare. Pharmacists already contribute to prevention, access to care, medication safety, health-system resilience and sustainability, but those contributions depend on appropriate education, recognition, technology and policy support.

The campaign calls on governments, policymakers, regulators, health insurers and the public to invest in pharmacists’ skills and integrate pharmacy more fully into health systems. For Canadian teams, the theme is especially relevant as scopes of practice expand unevenly and community pharmacies take on more clinical and public-health responsibilities.

A day for the whole pharmacy workforce

World Pharmacists Day marks the anniversary of FIP’s founding on September 25, 1912. FIP’s Council adopted the annual campaign in 2009. World Pharmacy Week, held September 19–25, broadens the recognition to pharmaceutical scientists, pharmacy technicians and other partners across the profession.

The most useful way to mark the occasion is to connect recognition with evidence: what pharmacy teams are already achieving, where patients still encounter barriers, and which supports would make care safer and more accessible.

Practice guidance for pharmacists

  • Share one measurable example of how your team improved access, prevention, adherence or medication safety during the past year.
  • Identify one recurring patient-access bottleneck and document the policy, staffing, technology or referral support needed to address it.
  • Review whether current training and workflows prepare the team for emerging needs such as digital health, climate-related disruptions and complex chronic disease.
  • Recognize pharmacy technicians, assistants, students and community partners whose work makes patient-centred care possible.
  • Keep advocacy accurate and patient-focused: explain both what pharmacists can provide today and where jurisdiction-specific limits still apply.
